PROLOGUE 🎀

There is a version of this story where she never gets into that taxi.

Where she stays, marries the boy her father chose, wears the blue saree her mother asked for, and never learns what it feels like to be loved by someone who notices when she's hurting before she says a single word about it.

That version exists somewhere, in some quieter life she didn't choose. This isn't that story.

This is the one where a girl runs from a wedding at midnight with a suitcase, a folder of certificates, and a coin purse of savings nobody knew she had — and a man who has spent years building walls nobody's ever gotten past stops his car for a stranger sitting outside a locked gate, for no reason he can properly explain even to himself.

Neither of them knows yet what that single decision is going to cost. Or what it's going to give them first.

She will fall for him slowly, then all at once, somewhere between a rain-soaked confession and a mela lit gold with string lights. He will fall for her the moment she looks at him like she isn't afraid, and spend months too careful, too guarded, to say so out loud.

They will have a happiness neither of them planned for — quiet mornings, chocolate-stained laughter, a jealousy neither of them will apologize for. And then, in front of two hundred people who never should have been there to witness it, they will lose it. Not to a stranger. Not to fate. To a truth one of them decided to carry alone for too long.

This is a story about the vow he never spoke — not because he didn't mean it, but because he waited too long to say it out loud, and by the time he tried, the words weren't enough anymore.

It's about a girl who left one house at midnight to save herself, and will have to decide, months later, whether she has the courage to walk out of another one for the same reason.

It's about love that isn't clean, or easy, or safe from the mistakes both of them will make trying to protect each other from the truth.

If you've ever loved someone enough to be furious with them — if you've ever waited for someone to finally say the thing they kept promising "soon" — this one's for you.

Welcome to Anaya and Rudra's story.

The vow he never spoke is still waiting to be said.

DEDICATION 💙

I don't really know how to write this without sounding like I'm trying too hard, so I'll just say it the way it actually feels.

I wrote this story on nights when I probably should've been sleeping. Some chapters came easy, like they were already sitting somewhere in me, waiting. Others I rewrote four, five times because it just didn't feel right yet — because I wanted you to feel it, not just read it.

So this is for you. Whoever you are, wherever you're reading this from.

Maybe you picked this up because the prologue got you. Maybe a friend sent you the link and said "you need to read this." Maybe you're just looking for something to feel, because your own week has been a lot and you needed somewhere else to put your heart for a while.

Whatever brought you here — I'm glad you stayed.

If you cry at some point reading this, good. If you get mad at Rudra, good. If you find yourself rereading a line at 1 a.m. because it hit somewhere you didn't expect — that's exactly what I was hoping for when I wrote it.

I think a lot about why we get so attached to characters who don't even exist. I don't have a clean answer for it. Maybe it's because fiction lets us feel things at a safe distance — we can be furious at Rudra for hiding the truth, we can ache for Anaya when she finds out, and none of it actually costs us anything. Or maybe it's the opposite. Maybe it costs us everything, for a little while, and that's exactly why we keep coming back for more.

Either way, I've loved writing these two more than I probably should admit. There were nights I'd finish a scene and just sit there for a minute, a little wrecked by something I wrote myself, which sounds ridiculous, but if you've ever written anything you actually cared about, you know exactly what I mean.

I hope Anaya feels like someone you'd want to protect. I hope Rudra frustrates you in the specific way people frustrate us when we already love them and just wish they'd say the thing out loud. I hope the mela lights and the chocolate-stained laughter and the "soon" that never quite comes in time all sit with you a little after you close the app.

This isn't a perfect story. I'm not a perfect writer. But it's an honest one, written by someone who still believes love is worth writing about even when it's messy and slow and imperfect, even when it says "soon" instead of the truth, even when it takes the long way to get where it's going.

If this book makes you feel even half of what it made me feel while I was writing it, then it's already done exactly what I wanted it to do.

So — thank you. For clicking on this. For giving a stranger's story a chance. For staying long enough to read a dedication, which let's be honest, most people skip.

I didn't skip writing it. I meant every word.

Now go fall in love with two people who don't exist. I promise it'll still hurt like they do.
